Mukono Municipality has launched an operation to evict more than 500 street vendors in the town.

The authorities asked the vendors to relocate to the various markets and shop buildings in the municipality.

On Wednesday, the municipality senior law enforcement officer, Mr James Nsimbi, led a squad which cleared the streets of vendors’ kiosks and stalls. The eviction started in Mukono Central Division and spread to other parts of the town.

The municipal town clerk, Mr Innocent Ahimbisibwe, said the vendors had been warned several times but they did not heed the notice.

He said most vendors lack trading licences and others had erected kiosks in inappropriate places, jeopardising orderliness in the municipality.

“We are not targeting individuals, but we want to restore sanity in the municipality. We have gazetted markets and we advised them to utilise them,” Mr Ahimbisibwe said.
