Mulago recalls specialists from Kawempe

Kampala. The specialist doctors who have been attending to complicated health issues of women at Mulago’s satellite hospital in Kawempe will be transferred to Mulago Specialised Women and Neonatal Hospital.
Dr Ruth Jane Aceng, the Health minister, said the transfer is intended to decongest other departments of Mulago Hospital and also shore up staffing of the new specialised hospital.
“All the specialists that have been working at Kawempe Referral Hospital with the exception of those required at hospital will move to the facility,” Dr Aceng said yesterday.
Specialists at Kawempe have not been demanding for any fee to attend to the women but at the new specialised hospital, each patient will be required to pay Shs50,000 as consultation fees.
Dr Aceng added that at least 105 medical workers have been trained to deal with women’s complicated health problems.
She also revealed that foreigners seeking health services at the specialised hospital will pay 25 per cent more on top of the initial local charges.
She said medical tourism will help government reduce on the operational costs of the hospital.
“We appreciate the aspect of regional integration for purposes of trade. That does not prevent us from…medical tourism,” Dr Aceng said. South Sudan, DR Congo and Burundi are among the countries whose nationals often seek medical treatment from Uganda.
