We often blame ourselves for failure and thank God for our success, but not for former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president, Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu.
After only two months of reflection following his defeat in the party presidential election last November, Gen Muntu has told his supporters that he is now grateful he lost the race to lead the country’s biggest opposition party, saying FDC is now torn apart by contradiction and factionalism.

“I thank God I did not become the party president again because it is full of contradictions. In my five-year term of office as party president, we were locked in contradictions instead of building party structures,” Maj Gen Muntu said during a consultative meeting in Fort Portal Town, Kabarole District, on Tuesday.

He said FDC is split between two approaches of capturing power with some members pursuing defiance while others are engaging in building party institutions.
Gen Muntu lost the party’s top seat to Mr Patrick Oboi Amuriat in November with Mr Amuriat receiving 57.6 per cent of the vote against Maj Gen Muntu’s 41.7 per cent.

Asked whether he would bow to his supporters demand to abandon FDC and form his own political party, Gen Muntu said there is need to first consult the people and collect their views for discussion with FDC party leaders.
He said it could only be after the two factions have failed to resolve their contradictions that any separation will happen, but with a clear objective of capturing State power.

“What am doing is good for the party because after my consultations, I will discuss the people’s views with party leaders (FDC) and we see how we can resolve all these issues and after we shall make a decision, and I think separation is healthy at some point,” Gen Muntu said.
The former FDC leader said he is ready for any disciplinary action that may be taken by the party leaders who claim his consultations are illegal.

Gen Muntu insisted that he informed the party president on the importance of consultations before starting them.
Ms Nyakato Rusoke, the Kabarole District FDC chairperson, said the majority of party members will be happy to see Gen Muntu quit.
“I’m ready to leave FDC party and go back home to Kitumba because of the confusion in our party,” she said.
