Bushenyi. Former FDC president Kizza Besigye has warned party members against rushing to support former prime minister Amama Mbabazi saying he may not be different from President Museveni.
Dr Besigye, who is seeking endorsement for being the party’s flag bearer in 2016 presidential elections, sounded the warning while talking to greater Bushenyi FDC delegates on Monday.
The delegates were in a meeting at the residence of Mr William Mukaira, the former Bushenyi FDC chairman.
“Some of you accuse me of failing to strengthen party structures thus making you decide to support Mr Mbabazi. You are taking a risk. By the way, there is no difference between Mr Mbabazi and President Museveni,” said Dr Besigye.
“Some of these political parties have been here for a long time. Some have celebrated their 60th anniversary but don’t have structures. Mine has just come and it’s the largest Opposition party with a Shadow Cabinet in Parliament. Any time, we are taking over,” Dr Besigye said.
He stressed that he still has the capacity to defeat Mr Museveni given a chance. He, however, said Ugandans have lost faith and confidence in change but asked the members to forget the times he has been defeated in rigged elections but focus on the success ahead.
While addressing large crowds at Kizinda playgrounds in Bushenyi District and Kabwohe Stadium in Sheema District, Dr Besigye said Ugandans are the ones to change the government and consolidate power rather than leaving it to the President and the gun.
“We have returned to the rule of the gun where the one with a gun got anything he wanted. It’s very bad because that’s what took me and Mr Museveni to the bush. We wanted the citizens to have power over the State and determine the future of their country,” said Dr Besigye.
