Following the instability that has rocked the Rwenzori region in the aftermath of the 2016 election, President Museveni has ordered immediate increase in deployment of security forces in the region where conditions have been volatile.

There has been counter-accusations with security forces blaming the Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu for the instability. Just yesterday the UPDF deployed in the Rwenzori region that covers parts of Kasese, Kabarole, Ntoroko and Bundibugyo districts to hunt for attackers responsible for killings in the region.

However in a statement released from State House this afternoon, Mr Museveni, although he didn’t specify the number of personnel to be deployed, said “That’s why I came here. I have heard your security concerns and I have directed the army and the police to deploy heavily and ensure peace and security returns,” said Mr Museveni who is currently in the Rwenzori Sub-Region in Western Uganda.
Mr Museveni added that he will not negotiate with bandits and that he is to force them out of their hiding places.

“We can’t entertain banditry and we can’t negotiate with bandits. They either come out or we shall get them out of their hide outs,” said the president who is in the company of First Lady Janet Museveni.

The president arrived yesterday in the region to assess the security situation. Mr Museveni toured up to Lamia border post on the Uganda/Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border where he addressed nationals on either side.

Bundibugyo borders DRC to the east and the president’s directive follows concerns residents of Busunga border town, Kabutabure Trading Centre, Nyahuka Town Council, Kayengye Trading Centre and in Bundibugyo district who expressed concern about unknown people who mainly come from the mountains of Rwenzori areas to terrorize villages in the lowlands, killing people and looting their property.

President Museveni, who was accompanied by the UPDF’s 2nd Division Commander, Brig Peter Erweru and the Rwenzori Regional Police Commander, then directed the UPDF and the Police to immediately increase their forces in Bundibugyo in order to ensure restoration of stability in the region.
