Museveni passes out over 900 prison warders

706 prison warder recruits were passed out after completing their 9 month's basic security training and 213 prison officers were also passed out after completing a three month's refresher course.

President Museveni on Thursday presided over the pass-out ceremony of over 900 recruit prison warders, wardress and officers. The ceremony too place at Luzira prisons grounds.

706 prison warder recruits were passed out after completing their 9 month's basic security training and 213 prison officers were also passed out after completing a three month's refresher course.

According to the Commissioner General of Prisons, Johnson Byabashaija, the prisons service needS more than 39,000 personnel to make the required force of 43,000 since currently they are only 9787 warders.

He said his department has made a big mile-stone in rehabilitating the inmates an achievement that made them rank number one in Africa.

He also told the president to consider purchasing a production infrastructure system of maize seed and cotton production for the prisons to manufacture their produces they have been growing.

Mr Byabashaija requested the president to pressurize the ministry of finance to provide financial support for the production of furniture which he tasked them to produce.

While giving his speech, Mr Museveni said his government still has other important things to think about, like constructing roads and other infrastructure other than recruiting other officers who he says become a burden to the country’s treasury.

"I know that the Uganda prisons service needs 49,000 staff and the Uganda police needs 80,000, but now we have only 43,000 policemen. We know all that, but we do things according to our resources,” Mr Museveni said.

He cautioned fresh recruits to be cautious of prostitution, alcoholism and corruption if they are to serve the service for a long time.

He however congratulated the prisons service on the number of achievements they have so far made.
