President Museveni has promised teachers and medical personnel that the government will construct houses for them across the country.

The President, while speaking at Kazo Secondary School in Kiruhuura District on New Year’s Day, called upon the teachers to be patient as government fulfills its promises.

“The NRM government is committed to building houses for teachers and medical personnel at their respective places of work in the country,” President Museveni said.

This comes at a time when hundreds of school teachers and medical workers in various districts have called for government intervention in constructing housing facilities in their areas of deployment.

The civil servants’ commuting from outside their deployment areas, following shortage of accommodation, has led to teacher and medical personnel absenteeism, indiscipline among pupils, poor academic performance and death of patients.

Some medical workers and teachers operate in areas 20km away from their places of abode, yet they are expected to appear at work frequently and timely.

The President, who was accompanied by First Lady Janet Museveni, pledged a donation of a bus to Kazo Secondary school as well as a computer laboratory and a library to the institution.

12 blocks secured
Under the Universal Secondary Education (USE) programme, Kazo SS, that caters for both boys and girls, has been able to secure 12 classroom blocks and two laboratories at a cost of Shs565 million.

The chairperson of the school’s board of governors, the Rev. Stephen Namanya, saluted the President for supporting the construction of the facility. He also lauded the NRM government for the provision of electricity and water to the area.

“Mr President, we thank you for supporting the construction of Kazo Secondary School. Since 2007, we continue to be the best performer in the A-level examinations in Kiruhuura District,” Mr Namanya said.
