Minister of Information, Technology and Communication, Frank Tumwebaze has set up a committee which will review operations of Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).

Mr Tumwebaze, on Monday while inaugurating the seven member committee at ministry of Information headquarters, Kampala argued that it’s vital to make full scan of UBC before requesting for financial support from government and making decision that will inform the public broadcaster’s operation.

“It is important to carry out a complete scan on the institution so that policies made by the cabinet as well as decisions made by the board and the staff of UBC are well informed,” Mr Tumwebaze said. “I have made my promise to the president and the cabinet that my first priority is to shape a national broadcaster which everyone can use, including the opposition.”

Mr Tumwebaze said his vision is to have a strong and well managed national broadcaster which will be able to cover the whole country, fully close the gap left by private players and help to tell the true story about Uganda’s rich heritage.
“UBC has great potential to shine both within the country and on airwaves worldwide,” he added.

However, Mr Tumwebaze argued that the national broadcaster can’t offer space to people who want to call for demonstrations and distablise the country.

The committee will be chaired by African Centre for Media Excellence co-founder Dr Peter Mwesige. Other members include; Mr Adolf Mbaine, a lecturer at Makerere University journalism and communication department; Mr Andrew Kibaya, a high court advocate and the committee’s secretary; Ms Peace Piwang, a human resource management expert , Mr Peter Okello Jabwelli, Mr Odrek Rwabwogo (Museveni's son in law) and Eng Kato Bitarabeho.

The committee’s terms of reference are; assessing the organizational capacity of UBC, studying quality of content and services of all UBC outlets (TV and radios), assessing innovative capacity of UBC and how do governments support national broadcaster.
