Museveni suspends payment of Kiboga, Kyankwanzi veterans

President Museveni has suspended the payment of gratuity to veterans in Kiboga and Kyankwanzi districts.
This follows a petition by the leaders of Kasejere, Kigemuzi and Nkrumah civilian veterans Associations to the president during their visit to State House Entebbe accusing those handling the payment of their gratuity of cheating them.

The Kiboga Resident District Commissioner, Mr Nickson Kabuye said the president has suspended the payment for two weeks to pave way for investigations into the allegations made by the veterans.
"The veterans were asked by the president to write down the names of the people who have fleeced them of their money, something they did to facilitate the president's investigation", he said.
According to Mr Kabuye, his office is awash with complaints backed with evidence from veterans being cheated of their money in the bank majorly by the army officers entrusted with the management of the scheme.
"According to the records of complaints I have in my office, some of the veterans are cheated more than half of the money they are supposed to get by these officers who pretend to have played a great role to secure the release of their money," Mr Kabuye explained.

Mr Tom Jagwe, the Chairperson Kasejere, Kigemuzi and Nkrumah civilian Veterans association, said the officers act immediately the money is wired onto the veteran's accounts. He said that some drive from as far as Kampala and when they reach at the bank (centenary bank Kiboga branch) they call their victims to come and withdrew the money and hand them their share.
A veteran told this reporter on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal that an army officer cheated him of Shs1 million out of the Shs1.5 million he received in gratuity last year. Previously the veterans camped at Kitagenda war memorial school in Lwamata town council for 100 days to express their grievances over late payment of their gratuity prompting Museveni to intervene.
