Museveni to fund Makerere perimeter wall

President Museveni has promised to build a perimeter wall around Makerere University campus to curb insecurity at the country’s oldest university.
“We shall take it up with the Ministry of Education to build a perimeter fence around the university, though this may not be done this year since we have already budgeted. But next year we shall ensure the fence is constructed,” Mr Museveni said at the closing of the counter-terrorism and security awareness week at the university campus on Friday.
He was responding to an appeal by the university’s guild president, Mr Ivan Bwowe, who told the President the institution was vulnerable to terror attacks because of unrestricted access to the campus which hosts more than 40,000 students.

Mr Bwowe said the university has more than 15 outlets and lacks a perimeter wall which makes the surveillance quite difficult.

In May, police said they had received information that some terrorists had promised a student from the university’s College of Computing and Information Sciences a down payment of Shs15m for his tuition fees if he planted a bomb in one of the blocks during examination time.
The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, last week organised a counter terrorism security awareness week at the university.
Gen Kayihura asked the students and other stakeholders to be vigilant and report any suspected terrorist.
The force carried out presentations on community policing and demonstrations during the week.
