A row has erupted in the Butaleja Muslim community following the appointment of Sheikh Batuka Munira as the new district Khadi.

The wrangle stems from the creation of a new district Muslim council out of the mother Tororo District Muslims Council.

A section of Muslims accuse the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Mubajje, of acting under political pressure to appoint Sheikh Munira.
But Sheikh Munira said the supreme council has 54 districts, including Butaleja, and that only a few people are trying to cause confusion among Muslims in the district.

“We shall solve this through legal redress because we shall not allow a few people to continue causing instability,” he said.

In 2010, Butaleja was granted Muslim district status from Tororo but their counterparts in Bunyole West opposed the new district, sparking off a sharp division.

Three officials from the Uganda Muslim Supreme Ccouncil visited West Bunyole to investigate the wrangles and they are yet to submit their report.

The UMSC spokesperson, Mr Nsereko Mutumba, said those with complaints should route their concerns through religious affairs committee rather than taking issues to the media.
