NRM 'beats' united Opposition in Busia by-election

President Museveni listens as NRM candidate in the LC 5 by-election for Busia District, Stephen Oundo Wanyama, addresses a rally in Buteba Sub-county on Monday.

The National Resistance Movement has clinched victory in the LC5 Busia by-elections, scooping a 59% share of the votes.

After the final tally of results, NRM candidate Mr Stephen Wanyama Oundo emerged winner, polling 31,443 votes, which represents 59 per cent of the total votes cast.

Oundo's closest contender was inter-party coalition candidate Mr Deo Hasubi Njoki who garnered 21,844 votes representing 41 per cent of the total votes cast, while 1358 votes were invalid bringing the total number of votes cast to 54,645.

Prior to the final results, the chief campaign manager for Inter-party coalition candidate Mr Frank Kasumba conceded defeat but hinted that the elections were mired by several irregularities.

However Electoral Commission spokesperson Mr Jotham Talemwa said that the elections were free, fair and peaceful.

"Voting was very successful and peaceful, all parties that contested hugged each other after the final results were announced, this means that they all accepted the results" Mr Talemwa said before adding that the results reflect the will of the people of Busia.
