A section of NRM supporters in Kabarole District have criticised the manner in which MPs are mobilising people and giving them cash handouts to drum up support for President Museveni’s sole candidature for 2016.
The MPs have been meeting members of the NRM league, NRM flag bearers, village, parish and sub-county chairpersons, explaining to them the Kyankwanzi resolution which endorsed President Museveni as NRM’s sole presidential candidate in 2016 general elections.
Addressing the press in Fort Portal Town on Thursday, Joseph Mashuhuko, an NRM activist, claimed MPs should wait for the party’s national delegates conference to choose the party’s presidential candidate.
Mr Mashuhuko condemned the manner in which the MPs are mobilising people by distributing money ranging from Shs5,000 - Shs20,000 for each member. He said the unequal distribution of cash divides people and disgruntled members may desert the party.
“Some MPs are not true NRM cadres and are using Museveni’s money to mobilise for other forums and themselves,” he said. He said there is need to amend the NRM constitution so that people who want to join the party are screened.
NRM chairperson women league Fort Portal Municipality Eunice Habwomugisha claimed the current NRM party of Kabarole is different from the past when cadres participated from the grass root level to the top.
But Fort Portal Municipality MP Alex Ruhunda accused those complaining of being part of frustrated members who have personal biases.
“We agreed and came up with the strategy. There was no secret because everyone was involved,” he said.
