The National Resistance Movement candidate, Ms Rose Mutonyi Masaba, was last night declared winner of the Bubulo West parliamentary by-election in Manafwa District.
She scored 29,135 votes to beat her rivals Mr Ahamadah Wekheya of Forum for Democratic Change, who polled 3,270 votes, followed by Mr Joseph Masolo Bufwambu (independent) who garnered 1,684 votes. Democratic Party candidate Paul Butita polled 662 votes and Mr Emma. A. Mwiyikinya polled 128 votes.
The elections were characterised by a low voter turn up, allegations of voter bribery and ballot stuffing. Bubulo West has 66,828 registered voters but only 34,879 cast their vote. The invalid votes were 760.
The Electoral Commission chairperson, Mr Badru Kiggundu, witnessed the declaration of results.
Ms Mutonyi pledged to unite the electorate and deliver quality services to the people.
“I am so delighted that the people of Bubulo West have entrusted me to serve them especially this remaining period,” she said in her victory speech.
The EC public relations officer, Mr Jotham Taremwa said: “This is the most peaceful election EC has ever witnessed.”
