NRM's Nabeta challenges Mwiru's victory in Jinja High Court

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the March 15 Jinja East constituency by-election, Nathan Igeme Nabeta, has petitioned the High Court in Jinja to nullify the victory of Mr Paul Mwiru of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
The Jinja Returning Officer, Mr Rogers Sserunjogi, declared Mr Mwiru winner with 6,654 votes against NRM's Nathan Nabeta who got 5,034 votes.
In a petition filed on Wednesday by Mr Igeme through his lawyers, Crane Associated Advocates, insists there was massive voter bribery and intimidation by the respondent and has attached affidavits of voters who claim were intimidated or maimed in the run-up and during the election.
One of the grounds the petitioner points out, is the utterances Mr Mwiru allegedly made during a campaign rally at Busoga Square in which he alluded to the fact that the election was 'a matter of life and death'. This, Mr Nabeta, believes intimidated many of his voters.
The Jinja District NRM Vice Chairperson, Mr Majid Dhikusoka, told this reporter in a telephone interview that they have a cache of evidence and all is set for a legal showdown with the FDC-leaning legislator.
"We instructed our lawyers to investigate whether our case was valid or not and they advised that we had an 'air-tight case'. As you are aware our supporters were beaten, our opponents used money to bribe voters and even inflated the voters' register which is a crime under Uganda's laws. So, we petitioned on Wednesday and we are waiting for the High Court to decide. As NRM, we are very ready to engage them in Court," he said.
