NRM leaders in Kayunga District have accused former Lands state minister Idah Nantaba of fighting the party in the district by opposing the election of party members on the district and sub-county executive.
Ms Nantaba, who is also the Kayunga District Woman MP, is said to have sponsored and supported the election of Independent candidates, Mr Saleh Balinsoni for the post of Kayunga District speaker and Ms Mayi Nakibuuka, as his deputy.
Mr Balinsoni contested for the seat with Mr Ntege Kizito, an NRM candidate, but Ms Nantaba allegedly gave financial and moral support to the former.
The minister is also said to have decampaigned all NRM councillors seeking sub-county speaker and deputy speaker posts as well as those who want to be appointed on the sub-county executive.
During an interview on Monday, the Kayunga District NRM chairperson, Mr Moses Karangwa, said: “The party leadership should find a way of disciplining her.”
Ms Nantaba, who reclaimed her seat as Kayunga District Woman MP on an Independent ticket during the February parliamentary election, vowed not to return to the NRM party. She accused its leaders of harbouring plans to destroy her political career.
She has since boycotted three functions presided over by President Museveni in Kayunga District.
However, commenting on why she supported Independent candidates against the official party flag bearers, Ms Nantaba said she does not care about which party one supports, but rather what the person can do for the people.
“It is true I supported Independent candidates against those from NRM. We want new blood in our politics so that our area can move forward,” Ms Nantaba said by telephone yesterday.
The Kayunga District NRM secretary general, Mr Joseph Ouma, said they would petition the party’s national leadership about the minister’s conduct.
