Napak fire victims start rebuilding homes

Napak residents have started rebuilding their homes two weeks after they were razed by fire. The fire, suspected to have been set by Karimojong boys hunting for wild rats, burnt houses in Loburapaise village, Narengemoru Parish in Ngoleriet Sub-county.
Last Monday, the Uganda Red Cross Society and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) delivered relief and household items to the victims.
They received 100 bags of posho flour and 30 bags of beans from OPM. They also received jerricans, saucepans, blankets, plates, soap, cups and tarpaulins from the Red Cross.
Picking up the pieces
Mr Paul Apun, the Loburapaise village chairperson, said they are struggling to rebuild their houses. “We have started rebuilding our houses but the challenge is where to get grass and other building materials since it’s a dry season. He said several families walk more than 70 km looking for grass and poles for building the houses.
Ms Sarah Nakiru, one of the affected residents, appealed to the government to help them with cultivation materials, such as hoes and seeds, to enable them produce food to replace the food which got burnt. The district chairperson, Mr Joseph Lomonyang, asked the communities to stop bush burning, warning that more houses would be burnt if they do not stop the practice.
