Kampala- Information Communication Technology minister John Nasasira, has become the first chairperson of the Smart Sustainable Development Model (SSDM) advisory board.
The SSDM is an initiative of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations body.
The board, to which Eng Nasasira is also a founding member, will, in addition to providing strategic guidance to the leadership of the Telecommunication Development Bureau, help the ITU link ICT for development with ICT for disaster management.
According to documents obtained by the Daily Monitor, the SSDM initiative was launched in Dubai on ITU World Telecom day 2012 to help communities deal better with disaster risk reduction and response.
An August 15 letter to Eng Nasasira signed by Mr Brahima Sanou of the Telecommunication Development Bureau, states that the advisory board will specifically help the ITU harness the potential of ICTs in socio-economic development and use the same technologies for saving lives in times of emergencies.
