Nekyon’s death: Lawyer charged over giving false information

Kampala.

Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to a lawyer charged with giving false information in respect to the death of former minister Akbar Adoko Nekyon.
Mr Adam Makmot Kibwanga, 39, is facing counts of conspiracy to defraud, forgery, uttering false documents, giving false information and electronic fraud.
In yesterday’s session presided over by the magistrate, Mr Charles Yeteise, Mr Kibwanga presented two sureties to guarantee that he will not jump bail. The court then granted him cash bail of Shs1 million while his sureties were both bonded at Shs50m not cash.
Mr Kibwanga is facing the charges alongside Ms Maria Akullo, 19, and Mr Aluko James Kazungu, 34, a lecturer at Kyambogo University. Court denied the duo bail on grounds that their sureties were not credible.
Prosecution contends that the accused this month conspired to defraud or deceive Nekyon’s family that he had been murdered. The accused allegedly uttered the false document in the names of Akullo at the CID headquarters in Kampala, well aware of the falsehoods contained in the instrument. It stated on the charge sheet that before the suspects handed in the false letter to police officers, they backdated it to May 8.
It is alleged that the accused gave police information, which they knew was false, that Nekyon died under mysterious circumstances. Ms Akullo is separately charged with impersonating Nekyon’s biological granddaughter. The magistrate adjourned the case to June 8 for mention.
