Masaka. Due to lack of funds, Masaka District has announced it will not recruit more health workers this financial year despite shortage of health workers in the district.
“As a district, we need nurses, but we cannot recruit them now because there is no money in our budget this financial year to pay their salaries,” the district health officer, Dr Stuart Musisi, said.

He was speaking at the graduation ceremony for Masaka School of Compressive Nursing early this week. A total of 481 nurses and midwives graduated with diplomas.
Dr Musisi said the district wage bill this year has remained the same at Shs1.2b as it was in the previous year.

The shortage
He said Masaka currently has a 30 per cent staff shortage. The district has 200 health workers of which 85 per cent are nurses and midwives.
The Masaka School of Compressive Nursing principal, Mr Mark Kalanzi, asked government to increase the number of tutors posted at the school to match the increasing student enrolment.
