The ordination of the new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Rt. Rev. Stanley Ntagali, is scheduled for Sunday at Namirembe Cathedral, the church announced yesterday.

Archbishop-elect Ntagali, the former Bishop of Masindi-Kitara Diocese, who was elected by the House of Bishops in June, takes over from Henry Luke Orombi. According to a statement from the church, Archbishop-elect Ntagali takes over two cathedrals; as the Bishop of Kampala Diocese with the Cathedral at All Saints’ Cathedral, Nakasero while the Provincial Cathedral is at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe.

“The service of enthronement will be a regular worship service with readings from the Bible, a sermon, and Holy Communion. In addition, the outgoing archbishop will hand over the Provincial Staff – a symbol of the archbishop’s spiritual authority – to the incoming archbishop,” reads part of the statement.

The province said the ceremony expected to be attended by more than 3,000 people, will see the archbishop renewing his vows, and the bishops will also pledge canonical obedience to him.

“The bishops will guide the new archbishop to his Provincial chair and place him on the chair, symbolising that they elected him to lead them and the entire CoU. The new archbishop will read his Charge – a kind of manifesto and vision for his ministry, leadership, and strategic direction.

Archbishop Orombi retired after nine years as the head of the Church of Uganda to concentrate on preaching the gospel, a move he said has been his life-long calling.
