A tweet by former US president Barack Obama, condemning racism has become the most liked tweet ever, with over 2.9 million social media users endorsing it.

This morning, it had been retweeted over 1.1 million times, with more and more people sharing it every second.

The tweet, quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela read; "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion..."

Obama followed the tweet with more quotes from Mandela; "People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love..."

"...For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

His tweet came after protesters opposing the removal of a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee from Emancipation Park rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the US on Saturday.
