Police in Kampala are hunting for a police officer for allegedly shooting dead a colleague. The officer at the rank of an assistant inspector, is now on the run after allegedly killing a probation police constable, Derrick Wabwire, who he accused of having an affair with his 16-year-old sister in-law.

The suspect, who is attached to the Special Investigations Unit and works at the Criminal Investigations and intelligence Directorate, had been housing his wife’s sister at the Jinja Road Police Station quarters.

He has also been part of the team investigating the fraud in the Office of the Prime Minister.
According to the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Ibin Ssenkumbi, the hunt for the suspect is still ongoing as investigations continue.

Suspect on the run
“We are searching for the suspects who run away after killing the police officer,” Mr Ssenkumbi told the Daily Monitor. The body of the deceased was taken to the city mortuary while the girl was treated for a bullet wound on her ear and later detained at Jinja Police Station.

It is alleged that the suspect, who has been taking care of his in-law, was alerted by some chapatti vendors who operate in the neighbourhood. He is reported to have entered his house only to find his in-law and the police officer naked. He then reportedly shot at the man and the girl but the bullet narrowly missed the girl and left her ear wounded.

Two gunshots were heard before neighbours rushed to inquire what had happened. “I was coming from outside when I heard the gunshots. I rushed to see what was happening but when I reached the scene, the owner of the house run away and we found that the young officer was already dead,” an eye witness told the Daily Monitor.

This is a second incident involving a police officer since the year began in Kampala. Last month, a police officer shot his lover at CIID headquarters in Kibuli.
