KAMPALA- Police in Kampala have arrested two of their own officers over shooting dead a civilian and injuring two others in two separate incidents on Sunday night and Tuesday morning.

Mr Robert Byamugisha, a probation police constable, is being held in connection with shooting dead one John Opio of Kikajjo Zone in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District.

Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said they are investigating why Mr Byamugisha shot Opio, an 18-year-old boy.

“Opio was shot in the sensitive body parts and was rushed to Gwatiro Hospital in Bweyogerere from where he was transferred to Mulago hospital for special treatment, but he passed on in the wee hours of Monday night,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

Mr Byamugisha, who is being detained at Kira Division police headquarters, is said to have declined to explain the circumstances of the shooting, but police have so far recorded four statements from eye witnesses.

The other constable, Anthony Aliu of Mulago Police Station is under custody for shooting two civilians yesterday morning in Kikumikikumi Zone, Wandegeya.

Police said Mr Aliu shot and injured his girlfriend, Ms Christine Asekenye, and one Kizito, a Makerere University student.
Mr Owoyesigyire said the suspect had developed a misunderstanding with the girl a few days ago.

“It is reported that Aliu had some disagreements with the girlfriend and accused Kizito of being involved. He suspected that the two were in a relationship and shot them in the legs. The victims are admitted to Mulago hospital,” he said.

Police said Mr Byamugisha would face murder and gun misuse charges while Mr Aliu would face charges of attempted murder and gun misuse.
