Moroto- One person was killed and others survived unhurt when a building on Main Street in Moroto Municipality collapsed.

The building that collapsed on Sunday belongs to Brig John Lorot, was under construction.

Eye witnesses said they heard a loud thud only to realise that the ceiling of the verandah had collapsed.

“The deceased who was a worker at the site was buried by bricks critically injuring. We took him to hospital where he died,” a witness who did not want to be named said.

According to officials of Moroto Municipality Engineering Department, the building collapsed because the contractors lacked experience and were using poor materials.

Mr Noah Ewalu, the Municipal Council mayor blamed the owner of the building for employing unqualified workers.

Mr Richard Aruk Maruk the Mt. Moroto Regional Police commander said they have launched investigations to establish what could have caused the building to collapse.

Incidents of collapsed buildings have been common in Uganda especially in Kampala city. Most of the incidents are blamed on bad workmanship and poor or lack  supervision by engineering bodies and city authorities,
