A memorial lecture at Makerere University and a dinner at Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala will be the first events to launch the Bernard Onyango Academic Excellence (BOAE) Awards on May 30.
Mr Onapito Ekomoloit, the BOAE Awards chairperson, said the scholarship is to recognise the late Bernard Onyango’s (1930–2013) long and exemplary service in tertiary education institutions.
“The BOAE awards and lectures are not only intended to motivate and spur excellence at Mr Onyango’s former school but also provide an opportunity for Ugandans to reflect on the issue of integity in contemporary academic institutions,” Mr Onapito said.
Onyango was a man of many firsts: First African Academic Registrar at the East African University; pioneer Academic Registrar at Makerere University and pioneer Academic Registrar at Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi. He was also the founding Board Chairman at Tororo Girls School, and also served as a member of the Board of Directors at Bank of Uganda.
The inaugural and memorial lecture is organised by St Peter’s College Tororo Old Boys Association, Makerere University and Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi.
The lecture will be held at Makerere University on May 30 and former Prime Minister Prof Apolo Nsibambi will be the key speaker.
