In Summary
The teachers from various schools across the district had invalid appointment letters while others had forged documents.
Namutumba. Some 142 ghost teachers in Namutumba have been on the district payroll for the last 10 years and receiving salaries for the entire period.
The ghost teachers were discovered by the District Service Commission following a three-month investigation ordered by the district council.
In December last year, a five-member committee headed by Mr Christopher Mutalya conducted the validation exercise following a spate of allegations about the existence of ghost teachers in various schools in the district.
The committee handed its report to the district vice chairperson, Mr Musilimu Butotoba, who in turn read it during a council meeting chaired by the speaker, Mr George Damba.
According to the report read out on Tuesday, 97 teachers were found with invalid appointment letters while 45 had forged academic documents.
The report also noted that some teachers appear twice on the payroll and have been receiving double salaries since 1999.
The committee set recommendations for action against the teachers but the council was adjourned until next week when it will reconvene to discuss the recommendations.
