The People's Progressive Party ( PPP) top executive has asked its president, Mr Jaberi Bidandi Ssali to take leave from party activities.

Mr David Opi Alila, the party’s secretary general says the national executive, the Party's highest organ decided that Mr Bidandi surrenders power to his vice president, Mr Dick Odur but will continue playing an internal role in the party.

The decision by the party, according to Mr Alila is backed with advice from Mr Bidandi’s medical doctors, adding that this call is due to the former Minister's ill health.

"It was thought wise by him and everybody around that continually engaging him is not very healthy. It was also a recommendation by the doctors to stay away from active politics," Mr Alila said.
According to Alila, the term of the incumbent PPP president expired mid last year, but the party failed to hold a delegate's conference due to lack of resources.

He says while the national council resolved to grant the current leadership another year, the president general's role had to be reviewed.

Alila however says that despite agreeing to leave the day to the day running of the party to the national executive, Mr Bidandi is still the PPP chairperson.
