The chairperson Pader Urban Council, Mr Joseph Omona Lapit, has been remanded to Kineni Prison on accusations of stealing solar panels.

Mr Omona is accused of stealing six solar panels donated in 2012 by Medicine sans Frontiers to help in pumping water to residents in the town council and neighbouring sub-counties. Mr Omona was charged on Tuesday and will reappear in court on January 30. Mr Omona was in charge of the town council stores where the solar panels disappeared last year.

Mr Ceaser Odong, a resident of the town council, accused police of selective prosecution. “How can police arrest only one person yet there are four other top civil servants within the town council who are also implicated in the disappearance of the solar panels?” Mr Odong asked.

The District Police Commander, Mr Ambrose Sabiti, declined to comment on the matter on account that he was tired.
