Kalungu LC5 chairperson, Mr Emanuel Musooke, has asked parents to support the education of girls so they can have equal rights and opportunities as boys.
Speaking at a thanksgiving ceremony for PLE results at St. Cecelia Girls Primary School on Tuesday, Mr Musooke said many parents still had a negative attitude towards girl’s education, preferring to keep them in the garden, while others were forced into early marriages.
He told parents that when a girl is educated she can benefit the family unlike boys who concentrate on looking after their wives and in-laws.
Mr Musooke also reminded parents to always give their children the basic requirements like scholastic materials, lunch and time to revise books.
The district education officer, Mr Ezilone Kayinga, said several schools had failed to perform to expectations because of the poor relationship between parents and school authorities.
He said some parents did not give lunch to their children and whenever they were asked to pay some money to cater for their children’s lunch at school, they refused. He threatened to order the arrest of such parents over child neglect.
He noted that the district had registered landmark results in last yea’s national primary examinations since its separation from Masaka in 2009.
