KAMPALA.

An accident occurred on Friday evening at 8pm when a Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) passenger train hit a trailer, registration number KCA 351V at Bugolobi. The train which left the station at 7.50pm had travelled for only 10 minutes when it approached Bugolobi and the driver saw a trailer along the tracks.

“The driver hooted for long but the driver of the trailer did not move. The train was moving fast and therefore there was nothing else to do. We ended up hitting the trailer,” Charles Tabu Gazzaman a passenger on the train said.

He went on to state that the passengers panicking, started screaming and shouting. “The screaming was too much!” he said, adding that the impact was loud and the wagons close to the engine shook as it derailed. Only the engine that hit the trailer derailed however, and URC had to send another engine to return the wagons to the train station.

Asked if the driver of the trailer survived the accident, Gazzaman said luckily for him, he did not seem hurt and he jumped out of the trailer and run away.

By the time of filing this report, there were no reports of fatalities or casualties and passengers were still at the station as URC management told them they were removing two badly damaged wagons before resuming the journey to Namanve.
