Mr Norman Musinga, the Kampala Metropolitan traffic commander, said the operation nick-named kawunyemu has helped curb the number of accidents in the country while creating income for the Force.

“Many people on Facebook and other social media platforms have nick-named me ‘Afande Kawunyemu’ but I am proud because police now has more money, thanks to the operation,” Mr Musinga said.

“My boys collect more than Shs30 million every week from those who drive while drunk. My target in the previous quarter was Shs1b but I failed to hit it. We collected more than Shs700m.”

Mr Musinga was speaking during a drink driving campaign organised by Uganda Breweries Limited, where more than 200 boda boda riders were educated against the vice.

“The current information I have shows that 212 boda boda riders were involved in fatal accidents from January to December 2014 and 97 passengers died. Also, 1,596 boda-boda riders and 854 passengers got injured in the same time frame.
As much as I commend you for embracing our new policy of wearing helmets, you still need to stop misuse of alcohol and drugs,” he told the cyclists.
