Police boss regrets teargasing Christians

Mr Geoffrey Kaheebwa

SOROTI- Mr Geoffrey Kaheebwa, the Soroti District Police Commander (DPC) has apologised to Christians in the area, for ordering his officers to fire teargas and live bullets at believers who attempted to access a disputed church building.

Mr Kaheebwa on Sunday commanded an operation to block Christians of Light Resurrection Ministries under the leadership of Bishop James Israel Tukei, from accessing Lifeline Church Ministries church building to conduct prayers.

Lifeline Church Ministries that was founded by Pastor Julius Peter Oyet, is entangled in a land wrangle with Bishop Tukei’s followers.

Mr Kaheebwa was speaking to Anglican Church Christians at Awoja Bridge to welcome Archbishop Henry Ntagali during his visit to the area.

“You heard that I teargased some Christians at Lifeline Ministries Church the previous Sunday. It’s because they were rowdy and violent,” Mr Kaheebwa said. “In future, I will handle any form of violence in places of worship with minimum force. I will not use maximum force again,”

He warned Christians against indulging in violence at places of worship.
