Police investigate presence of armed men at ex-LoP’s home

Ms Winifred Kiiza, the ex- Leader of Opposition in Parliament

Police are investigating allegations that men wearing army uniform camped at the home of former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP), Ms Winifred Kiiza in Kiburara, Kasese town.

According to a statement by Mr Emilian Kayima, who speaks for the police force, the general inquiry has been sparked by conflicting statements by Ms Kiiza and police officers who responded to the reports about the presence of the armed men at the home.

“As a result, we have taken a stand to open a General Enquiry File (GEF) to investigate these allegations. It’s being handled by the regional team at Rwenzori East. Leaders, must at all times cooperate with security agencies to solve matters that bring about insecurity, Mr Kayima said.

On Friday, Ms Kiiza posted on social media platforms that the men were at the home with the intention of shooting, Mr Yokasi Bihande, her husband.

“Please pray for me and my family. On Friday night two armed men spent the night in my compound in Kasese, waiting for my husband to come home and they shoot him. Some friend of ours tipped us and he did not go home that Friday night,” he posted. “As I am posting this message, again, nine armed men in military uniform have surrounded our house again in Kiburara Kasese. All of them armed to the teeth with machine guns and RPGs.”

She added: “This kind of situation has been around my Kampala residence too in the last few weeks. Whoever they are after, God is watching. And whoever is in charge of this scheme, it must be put on record that I and my family are Ugandan citizens who are entitled to all citizenry rights. I don't know whether my husband will be alive by morning. Keep praying. In God we trust. We pray that the devil is ashamed in his whole scheme. God night.”

Mr Kayima said the Regional Police Command, Rwenzori East quickly responded and visited the home several times but found no military men at the home.

“The Regional police headquarters called Mr Bihande and he declined to speak to the police done earlier. This left police doubting the authenticity of the allegations. We spoke with some domestic workers and neighbours about these issues and they denied knowledge of any military presence,” Mr Kayima said.
