Kampala

Police and other security agencies have arrested a Uganda People Defence Force soldier, who allegedly shot dead three people including his lover and injured another three, after suspecting his girlfriend of having a love affair with another man.

Pte. Patrick Odongo attached to Mbuya army headquarters was arrested in a shack where he was hiding in Mbuya just outside the barracks, Kampala, since he allegedly shot seven people at Kinawataka in Wakiso District on Sunday.

Pte. Ondongo allegedly shot dead Caesar Kele, Scovia Akello and her five-year old son only identified as Junior.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Ibin Ssenkumbi said he had been handed over to Jinja Road Police Station.

“We have him on charges of murder. We are still recording more statements from the victims before we take the next course,” Mr Ssenkumbi said yesterday.
It isn’t yet clear whether the suspect will be tried in the military court martial or civilian court.

Mr Ssenkumbi said security officers also recovered the gun he allegedly used. He said the gun is to be handed over to the ballistic expert to establish whether the cartridges recovered at the scene were from that gun. Earlier, police had warned the public that the suspect was armed and dangerous.
