6 arrested over lack of valid driving permits, 40 cars impounded

Police in Jinja have arrested six people including two drivers of government vehicles during an operation by traffic department on to crack down on errant motorists.
The officer in charge of traffic Jinja Police Station, Mr Francis Onen said the operation was a directive from Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) in charge of traffic and road safety, Dr Stephen Kasiima in a bid to reduce on road carnage.

“This time the instructions are clear; no valid permit, no driving. The vehicle should be in good mechanical condition. Those without driving permits are taken to court right away,” said Mr Onen.
According to Mr Onen, some of the suspects claimed to be working for statehouse but failed to produce documents to substantiate their claims.

He said the operation under the theme

130 drivers arrested on Masaka Road

Police have arrested 136 drivers on Kampala –Masaka Road in a bid to address the increasing number of accidents

is a nationwide police campaign in partnership with Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) among other road safety bodies to reduce on number of accidents.
In the ongoing operation, drivers of over loaded vehicles and Boda bodas cyclists carrying more than one passenger are charged on spot.

Mr Onen also said the exercise is timely since schools are opening on Monday for third term.
Mr Ronald Serwada, a boda boda rider was among the suspects charged Shs200,000 for over overloading under the code of traffic laws of dangerous loading.
