What you need to know:

The police boss says brutality is an individual weakness but not a method by the Force to protest poor working conditions.

BUIKWE- Njeru Division Police Commander Christopher Katumba Kiggundu has dismissed talk that poor pay and pitiable working conditions are to blame for the rise in cases of police brutality.

Speaking at the Nile River Resort in Njeru, Buikwe District during a family day out for division police officers last weekend, Mr Katumba said the situation is not as bad as portrayed.

“Some people at a gym were telling me that the actions of Old Kampala DPC Joram Mwesigye, who beat a journalist during a demonstration, were because of frustration in the Uganda Police Force. But officers, are you really frustrated?” he asked a group of about 50 police officers.

The officers shouted back in the negative, implying that they are not unhappy with either low pay or perceived poor living conditions.

“I think this (beating up of the journalist) was an individual decision and not born out of frustration. We are okay,” the DPC added.

Mr Katumba said allegations of frustration on the part of police officers are meant to tarnish the image of a Force that is employing many Ugandans.

Buikwe District MP Dorothy Mpiima urged the officers to maintain a high level of discipline as they serve the country.
