Police have issued an order stopping the planned meeting on launching electoral reforms in Kabale Town scheduled for tomorrow arguing that they were not informed in advance to participate in the formulation of the day’s programme and suitable venue.
The regional police commander for Kigezi region, Ms Olivia Wawire, issued the order on Thursday while addressing journalists at her office.
She said if the organisers fail to adhere to the orders, the police shall use reasonable force to disperse them.
“We have just received an invitation to this function one day to the event instead of three days mandated by the law. We have not been involved in making the day’s programme and finding the suitable venue,” she said.
She added: “We do not know how many people will be attending this function so that we can provide sufficient security. I hereby stop the meeting until the organisers follow the right procedure,” Ms Wawire said.
According to the programme submitted to the police, retired Bishop Zac Niringiye, Dr Kizza Besigye, Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu, Mr Norbert Mao, Ms Miria Matembe, Fr Geatano Batanyenda and Mr Olara Otunnu are the main speakers before they launch the electoral reforms.
