Police have intensified the hunt for the driver of the vehicle that knocked and killed an Australian couple, Dean Griffioen 33 and Tanya Griffioen Natasha 34 at Namagogo, Mubende district last month.
The Director Traffic and Road Safety, Dr Stephen Kasiima earlier this week told journalists that the father of the Land cruser Prado driver who is into hiding was arrested and remanded to prison for telling police lies.
“We received reliable information that the driver of the land Cruser is his son, contrary to what he had told police. He had told us that he had just hired a driver who he did not know. But we learnt from his other son that it was his brother, who was driving and that they were rushing to buy land in Mubende before the accident,” Dr Kasiima said.
He further noted that, “His other son who they later visited at school wasn’t coached and gave us the information that we are basing on.”
“He told us he dint know the driver, yet it is his son who fled after the accident that he is trying to protect,” Dr Kasiima added.
According to police, the driver was over speeding and as he tried to overtake, knocked the couple from their lane. The couple that was riding on a motorbike was on a four-day tour in Uganda.

Dr Kasiima also said that eight people including three women and five men were in police custody for stealing from the couple after the accident.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen Kale Kayihura who also addressed the same presser said that serious penalties will be initiated to curb those that steal from accident victims.
“Can you imagine the kind of society we live in? Someone is dying, instead of offering first aid, someone is searching for what to loot,” the IGP said adding: “We must initiate a serious penalty to deal with such people,” he said.
Gen Kayihura also ordered the traffic police leadership to be more vigilant to avoid embarrassment on the roads.
“The couple had travelled through very many places to reach here but only to die on our roads, can you imagine,” Gen Kayihura noted.
The police boss also said efforts are being made to extend condolences to the family of the fallen Australian couple.
