Police have issued the traffic guidelines for New Year celebrations. Police also announced that motorists will be diverted to enable smooth traffic flow on some city roads.
Addressing journalists at central police station [CPS], the Traffic Commander Kampala Metropolitan police, Mr Norman Musinga said Uganda like many countries in the world, will mark the end of year 2016 and usher in 2017 with lots of merry making, so most revellers in Kampala are expected to camp in the city as they wait to usher in the New Year with fireworks.
He explained that areas like places of worship, hotels, stadiums and other public resorts will be congested and traffic jam along the roads leading to those places is expected and acts of lawlessness during the awkward hours hence traffic guidelines must be adhered too.

Mr Musinga said that by 5pm of today, there will be traffic diversions in the areas of High Court, Standard Chartered round about, UBC round about and all routes leading to Sheraton asserting that Sheraton is a centre of excitement so traffic congestion is expected.
“The reason for the diversions is that sometimes you all know those areas I have mentioned are always a centre of excitement. Very many motorists are heading to specific places at the same time so Vehicles and human traffic are expected in all those areas. Therefore our intention is to regulate and allow pedestrians to move through smoothly than allowing vehicles,” Mr Musinga noted.

He however warned that there will be no parking along the Nile Avenue, Speke Road, Ternan Avenue, Ssezibwa Road, Kintu Road, UBC round about and high court roundabout, asserting that any vehicle abandoned there will be towed to police station.
Mr Musinga also said that Traffic officers are going to be deployed within and outside Kampala metropolitan areas to ensure that there is smooth flow of traffic urging motorists to avoid being taken by excitement during this period but follow the traffic guidelines to avoid inconvenience.

“The traffic police will guide you according to what will be taking place where you will be going and the deployment that will be there will guide you were to pass and definitely you must comply,” Mr Musinga said.
Mr Musinga also warned motorist against driving while drunk as well as carrying excess passengers, vowing to arrest whoever goes against the law.
He also insisted that burning of tyres in the middle of the roads after the New Year has been ushered is prohibited.
