Police pick 5 bombs at city building, close it

KAMPALA. Police on Friday closed a city building after five bombs were picked from around it in a space of three weeks.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said a decision to close a building at plot 66 on Kampala Road was reached on Friday after two more bombs were picked at the same facility.
Three weeks ago, police picked three bombs that had been dumped at the same structure in the afternoon hours. They were sighted by a passer-by, while the Friday bombs were seen by an engineer who was reroofing the building in the morning hours.
After sighting the grenades, the engineer alerted security officer, Mr Siraje Kitibo, attached to Arua Park who confirmed the suspicious objects were explosives. Mr Kitibo informed the Officer in Charge of Arua Park Police Station, ASP Kigenyi who hurriedly called the police bomb squad.

“This time round we have told the people to evacuate the area, until we confirm the place is safe and there’s no more bombs.” Mr Matabi said.
Police said the building has been closed until further notice to give its teams time to do search and make sure the building is safe to be occupied again.
“We also call upon the public to remain calm and also to be on the lookout of any suspicious items and activities in their areas of residence, worship and leisure. Please call us in case you see anything unusual for a quick response,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.
