Police probe attack on DPC Kirumira’s wife

Police are investigating an alleged attack on wife of former Buyende District Police Commander Muhammad Kirumira by unknown assailants.
Ms Mariam Kirumira was reportedly attacked on Friday by two assailants wearing sunglasses and T-shirts at Busega roundabout outside the capital, Kampala, as she headed to Railway Police Station in Kampala to check on her husband who had been arrested and detained there the previous day.
She said the attackers trailed her from her home in Gogonya, Bulenga in Wakiso District to Busega where they tried to pull her off a motorcycle but she was saved by the boda-boda rider who sped away towards a gathering of other people and the pursuers abandoned the chase.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, said Bulenga police had been assigned to investigate the alleged attack and provide Ms Kirumira’s wife security to avoid a similar or repeat attack on her.
“She reported a case at Bulenga Police and some officers have since been assigned to investigate the matter. As police, we have resolved to make patrols near her home day and night to make sure she is safe,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.
However, Ms Kirumira said she had not seen any security personnel around her home as claimed by police, adding that unknown men tried to access her home on Sunday night but they were chased by neighbours.
“There is no security around my home. Some men were seen loitering around my home on Sunday night but they took off after they were sighted by residents. It was past midnight,” she said.
Her husband, Mr Kirumira, was arrested on Thursday by the police Flying Squad Police Unit (FSU) and charged with scandalous conduct, extortion, corruption, unlawful exercise of authority and discreditable conduct before the police disciplinary court.
He was taken to Railway Police Station in Kampala but was later transferred to the dreaded Nalufenya detention centre in Jinja District at midnight. He will reappear in the police court today.
Mr Kirumira, through his relatives, on Friday filed a suit at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court challenging his detention by the police tribunal before the case is heard and concluded.
Meanwhile, residents of Gogonya in Wakiso where Kirumira lives, have replaced Mr Kirumira’s door that was cut out by police using powered saws during his arrest.
He had locked himself inside the house insisting he could not allow to be arrested by FSU officers yet he had ever arrested some of them in criminal activities while he was commander of Old Kampala Police Division.
