Kabale- Police in Kabale District have cited conspiracy in a case where two of their own lost a gun.

Two police officers attached to Kabale Police Station’s department of tourism claimed that while on night duty at Cephas Inn Hotel in Kabale Town on Sunday, they lost to thugs an AK47 rifle with 30 rounds of ammunition. The two officers have since been arrested.

However, the District Police Commander, Mr Bosco Arop, on Tuesday raised several questions about the circumstances under which this gun was stolen.
“The circumstances under which this gun was stolen do not show anything related to using force while taking it from the owners,” Mr Arop said.

“There is a likelihood of conspiracy or a planned move from inside the hotel. That is why we have arrested 14-workers of this hotel to help in police investigations,” he added.

Mr Arop appealed to residents to help security organs to recover the gun.

He also said cases of house-breaking and theft have increased in Kabale Town and police have intensified day and night operations targeting mainly idlers and drug abusers.

Cases of thugs targeting guns are common in the region. On June 25, unknown assailants killed a private security guard at Mpororo Coffee Factory in Ntungamo Town and took away his gun.

In April, a gun was snatched from a guard at Reynolds Construction Company site in Ntungamo District.

In the same month two guns were recovered from a home of a Ugandan in Kitwe Ntungamo. Early this year, two other guns were snatched from security guards in Ntungamo.
