Police restrict fireworks display for New Year

Police in Aswa region, have restricted hotel owners and other business entities in the region to display fireworks for not more than five minutes on New Year or answer legal charges of violating police guidelines.
Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema, in an interview with Daily Monitor, cautioned all those permitted to display the fireworks to strictly adhere to Police guidelines.
Mr Okema, said they have permitted 22 hotels, Pubs, Discotheques and bars within Acholi-Sub-region, with Gulu district having 14 places where the fireworks will be displayed.
“We want this message to be received well by the hotel owners. We have only given them five minutes to display the fireworks. Any one who exceeds the given time period will be answerable to the police,” he said.
Police says the intention of these guidelines is to avoid likely accidents that may arise due to lengthy fireworks display.
“At times, explosives if misused can be life threatening to people,” adds Mr Okema.
He added that Police will be on alert monitoring all the places that were permitted to display the fireworks noting that only the recommended places will display the fireworks.
During the Indian Dewali celebration in Gulu this year, many residents within the Municipality were caught unaware and frightened as the Indian community displayed fireworks at Acholi Inn hotel in Gulu.
Last year, a reveler who turned up to watch the fireworks display at Bomah Hotel was hit by a a stray fireworks ball in the testicles and hospitalized.
