Police retrain 400 to deal with festive season crime

Jinja. In an effort to ensure law and order prevails during the Christmas season, police have retrained 400 officers on how to deal with the most rampant crimes committed during festive periods, a senior police officer has disclosed.
Addressing police officers in Jinja Police Barracks early this week, Assistant Inspector of Police Fred Yiga said the officers had to be drilled on how to nip in the bud the action of criminals who are poised to pounce on the population.
“People should be happy because this is a festive season. No one should stop anyone from being happy. We will do our best to stop those who are planning to make it difficult for other to enjoy their happiness,” Mr Yiga said.
He continued: “We have put in place arrangements to counter the criminal actions. We are targeting those who want to inconvenience others during this period of Christmas.”
Mr Yiga, also police’s Chief Political Commissar, warned those who commit crimes especially during this period, that the law will be applied to the fullest irrespective of the reason for committing the crime.
“Don’t commit crime for the sake of having a joyous Christmas. If you can’t afford to have the things you want this Christmas, there is always the next. Just keep working hard for another Christmas instead of stealing or harming others,’’ he said.
Mr Yiga also urged Ugandans to get used to the idea of crime preventers because they are helpful in areas without police presence such as deep in the villages.
