Three police officers arrested for shooting dead city luggage carrier

KAMPALA. The city business community in Kisenyi were left in grief when a police officer shot dead a renowned luggage carrier Friday morning.
Mr Emilian Kayima, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, said Asuman Lukenge was hit by a stray bullet as police officers pursued a suspected thug.

“The thug was running into crowds and our officer released a bullet to scare him. This bullet unfortunately hit a casual labourer killing him instantly,” Mr Kayima told journalists at the city’s central police station.
He said three police officers involved have been arrested and detained at Old Kampala Division Police Station.

“We could not establish which police officer released the bullet that killed the civilian. That is why we detained all of them until our investigations are complete,” Mr Kayima said.
He said a constable, a corporal, and a special constable were involved in the chase.
By press time, Lukenge’s body had been taken to Mulago Hospital morgue.
On June 29, Robert Okiriya, a police officer at the city’s Old Taxi Park shot dead an unidentified man who allegedly tried to grab his gun. Two people were also injured in the scuffle.
