Police tightens security on border points ahead of elections

Mbale- Police have deployed heavily at the boarder points in eastern region ahead of the February 18 general election.

The Elgon regional Police commander, Mr James Ruhweza said police have sealed off all boarder points to prevent Kenyans from sneaking into the country to participate in the coming elections.

“We don’t want to see somebody from another country crossing into the country during election period,” said Mr Ruhweza.

He told Daily Monitor police and UPDF have deployed at Lwakhakha boarder, Busia boarder, Malaba among others in order to guarantee free and fair elections.

Mr Ruhweza also directed all District Police Commanders [DPC’s] to make sure security is tight in their areas. “We are going to have patrols at all borders points, “he said.
The RPC further warned people against taking laws into their hands and causing havoc during elections.

“We have enough mechanisms, Personnel and equipment to deal with that hooliganism. We have intelligence information that there is group of people threatening to demonstrate the results. But we are ready to deal with them,” said Mr Ruhweza.

The RPC said that the police will ensure that special offices are set up to receive and record incidences of crime during elections.

“We have enough space in all government prisons across the country to keep such people. We are going to try our level best to make sure elections are peaceful, ”he said.

The RPC said police have mapped violent places in respective districts.

Meanwhile, Sironko RDC, Mr Moses Kigayi Wamoto, directed all bars, hotels, Video films not to open from Feb.17-19.

“We don’t want them to open their businesses on the eve of elections and on the elections day because it jeopardizes our operations,” said Mr Wamoto.

He said security in the district is on the high gear to deal with somebody who involve in disrupting elections.
