A police constable at Gulu Central Police Station has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a 15-year-old-girl. The constable allegedly sneaked into the Child and Family Protection Unit last Sunday night, where the girl, whose parents had reported a defilement case against her, was being kept for safe custody before a medical examination could be carried the following day. The Aswa Region police spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, said officer was arrested following a complaint by the girl.
“The girl complained that one of our own police officers attempted raping her and she identified the suspect who was on duty that night,” said Mr Okema.
Trouble started on Sunday night when the 30 year old suspect allegedly left his duty at the counter at the police station, sneaked into the Child and Family Protection Unit, where the victim was being kept for safe custody before a medical examination could be carried the following day (Monday).
Mr Okema further explained that a case was opened under file No. CR 2588/2014 and has already been forwarded
to the Resident State Attorney for advice, before the suspect could be produced to court for prosecution.
The incident comes in the wake of numerous m complaints of money extortions and violation of human rights by police officers in the region.
