Shs597m earmarked for Namugongo martyrs Day celebrations

Rev Father Vincent Lubega, the Namugongo Catholic Parish priest revealed that a budget of Shs 597m has been allocated to festivities whose theme is ‘Stand Firm in Faith that we have been taught.’ Hoima diocese is the host of this year’s Catholic Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations together with the Catholic Secretariat.

With just eight days away, preparations are in high gear at the Namugongo Catholic and Anglican Martyrs shrines ahead of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations set for June 3.
The annual event pays homage to the 45 Catholic and Anglican martyrs, who were executed for their faith on orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda between 1885 and 1887.
On June 6, 1920 the 22 Catholic Martyrs were beatified by Pope Benedict XV and were declared saints on October 18, 1964 by Pope Paul V.

Today, May 27, the Christian and tourism community have participated in the Martyrs walk from Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine to Old-Kampala church, where St. Matia Mulumba was killed.
