President calls for food aid in Karamoja

President Museveni has called for emergency food distribution in Karamoja sub-region to rescue the families that are facing starvation

Moroto. President Museveni has called for emergency food distribution in Karamoja sub-region to rescue the families that are facing starvation.
“Other projects such as roads, electricity, water and others can wait but hungry people cannot wait because they are hungry, therefore, affirmative action is needed to rescue the lives of the people of Karamoja,” the President said.
He made the call last Friday after Moroto District leaders presented to him the hunger situation in the sub-region where more than 53,000 households live without or with only one meal a day.
Mr Museveni was attending convocation peace prayers in the district.
Moroto District chairperson Mark Aol Musoka said people had cultivated food, but the harsh climatic condition destroyed them.
The most affected areas in Moroto include Longorok, Kidepo, Mogoth and Pupu parishes in Irupa Sub-county.
According to Nakapiripirit District production coordinator Tengei Marrio, the crops germinated well but were destroyed at the flowering stage.
He appealed to other families who might still be having some little food to avoid preparing it at traditional parties.

Current situation
The worsening hunger situation in Karamoja is a result of prolonged dry spell and acute crop failure. This has made several families, especially in Kaabong and Moroto districts, to move to Kenya in search of food.
